ATBU Must Stick to Its Mandate, Varsity Spokesman Declares

Malam Zailani Bappa, spokesperson of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), has clarified that the recent directive restricting the university to its original technology-based mandate is a federal government policy, not a decision of the Vice Chancellor or governing council.

Bappa recalled that ATBU, like other specialized universities, was originally matched with conventional universities by the Buhari administration in 1984 but was later de-matched in 1988, with its clear identity as a technology university.

“At that time, ATBU strictly ran only three faculties — Science, Engineering, and Agriculture — all purely technology-based,” he said. “It was not until the tenure of Professor Sani Sambo in 1995 that other faculties were introduced, but even then, they had to justify their technology relevance.”

He revealed that last month, the Minister of Education, Inde Alausa, met with governing councils of all federal universities and issued a policy directive:

  • Technology universities must stick to technology courses.
  • Universities of Agriculture must focus solely on agriculture.
  • Universities of Transportation and others must also remain within their specialized mandates.

“This is exactly what the Federal Government has directed,” Bappa stressed.

The spokesperson dismissed claims that ATBU’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Ibrahim Hassan Garba, was acting against the university or Bauchi community.

“It is completely misplaced for anybody to say the VC is against ATBU or the Bauchi people. This is a federal government directive, not his initiative,” Bappa clarified.
