Youths Take the Lead: YAN, Sports Ministry Launch Bold Campaign Against Irregular Migration in Katsina

In a powerful move to combat the growing crisis of irregular migration among young Nigerians, the Youth Assembly of Nigeria, in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, has launched a statewide awareness campaign across Katsina’s most affected local government areas.

The initiative, which kicked off with a series of town hall meetings and street rallies, aims to enlighten youths on the dangers of irregular migration and offer alternatives through skill development, entrepreneurship training, and empowerment opportunities.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, held in Jibia—a border town known for high migration traffic—the Katsina State Coordinator of the Youth Assembly of Nigeria, Fatima Muhammad, emphasized the urgency of the campaign.

“We are losing too many of our bright, young talents to the illusion of greener pastures abroad. This campaign is about saving lives, offering hope, and reminding our youths that their dreams can thrive right here in Nigeria,” she said.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, represented by Director of Youth Empowerment, Mallam Idris Gambo, reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to tackling the root causes of irregular migration, including unemployment, insecurity, and lack of access to education.

The campaign is currently making its way through hot-spot LGAs such as Daura, Mai'adua, Kaita, and Baure, with hundreds of youths in attendance at each stop. The awareness drive includes live testimonials from returnees, documentary screenings, and the distribution of informational materials in Hausa and English.

One participant, 21-year-old Abubakar Sani from Kaita, expressed gratitude, saying,

“I almost attempted to cross the desert last year. This program opened my eyes to the risks and gave me new hope.”

The campaign continues in the coming weeks, as organizers plan to establish Youth Support Desks across border communities to offer guidance and alternatives to would-be migrants.
