Senator slams wage disparity on $10bn NLNG Train 7 project, demands justice for Nigerian workers

 Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has taken to his X (formerly Twitter) account to issue a bold warning against the growing foreign domination of Nigeria’s petroleum and gas industry, decrying the gross wage disparity between Nigerian and expatriate workers.

In a fiery post, Sani described it as “unacceptable” for Nigerian citizens to earn as little as $120 monthly, while their Korean counterparts reportedly take home $7,000 for performing the same roles on major oil and gas projects.

“This is our land and our resources,” Sani declared. “Nigeria’s petroleum and gas wealth must not be controlled or dominated by foreigners. The exploitation of our people under the guise of expertise is nothing short of modern economic injustice.”

Sani backed the concerns raised by the National Association of Plant Operators (NAPO), urging authorities to act swiftly to address their grievances and ensure fair treatment of indigenous workers.

He specifically pointed to the multi-billion dollar NLNG Train 7 project, valued at $10 billion, emphasizing that such a massive investment must first and foremost benefit Nigerians, not shortchange them.

His comments have sparked widespread debate online, with many Nigerians echoing his call for local empowerment and equitable labor practices in the country’s lucrative energy sector.

Observers say the federal government and multinational operators may soon come under pressure to review hiring policies and wage structures, especially as the Train 7 project moves into a critical phase.

“Justice in the oil sector starts with fair wages and opportunities for Nigerians,” Sani concluded.
