 ...as former deputy takes legal action

Newly Elected Shira Local Government Council Chairman in Bauchi State, Babangida Ishaq Abdullahi has been admonished to discharged his duties with the fear of God, honesty, justice, humility and unwavering dedication.


The State Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Auwal Mohammed Jatau who counseled the council chief, said "leadership is a trust and sacred responsibility which he is expected to discharge to the wellbeing of his people.


It could be recalled that a bye-election in the Shira Local Government Council was weekend conducted by the State Independent Electoral Commission  (SIEC) in which Babangida Ishaq Abdullahi and Aliyu Adamu emerged victorious as chairman and deputy chairman respectively.


Rt. Hon. Auwal Mohammed Jatau noted that the two Shira council chiefs emerged through a transparent, peaceful and constitutionally guided elections conducted by the state independent electoral commission.


This event, according to him, followed the unfortunate but necessary constitutional process that led to the suspension and removal of the former leadership of Shira Local Government Council.


He explained that it was a proven case of gross misconduct, hence the state government in partnership with the State House of Assembly, acted with pudility, due process, accountability and the rule of law, a principle that remains the bedrock of good governance.


The deputy governor further noted that the people of Shira Local Government have clearly spoken through the ballots and impacted youth with their mandate, which trust he said, they should not take it lightly, but rather govern with transparency and always be guided by the constitution and laws, as well as the policies of the state administration.


He told the Shira council chiefs, "You should work closely with your councilors, traditional rulers, youth and women leaders, as well as other stakeholders to deliver meaningful development to the people.


"I expect prudence in the management of scarce resources and inclusive leadership listen to the people, respect diversify and address the genuine yearnings of the community you serve".


Rt Hon. Auwal Jatau further charged the Shira New leadership to shun action that will bring dishonour to their offices or discredit the trust the people have reposed in them.


Meanwhile, the deputy chairman of Shira local government council, Hon Adamu Usman has filed a legal suit at the Bauchi High Court challenging his purported removal from office on February 28, 2025 via a viral publication on social media, specifically a facebook post.


He recalled that the facebook publication contained a document titled, "Resolution to remove the Chairman of Shira Local Government Council (Hon. Abdullahi Ibrahim Beli) and Deputy Chairman (Hon. Adamu Usman) from office, signed by councillor, Andubun Ward, Hon. Abdullahi Wada.


Deputy chairman, Adamu Usman Ba-Maraya told the press in Bauchi Friday, a day to the bye-election that he was never summoned to appear before any investigation panel, committee or tribunal, nor was he given any opportunity to defend himself against any allegation as required by Section 20 (7) of the Local Government Law and section 36 of the 1999 Constitution.


The plaintiff explained that he only heard about the removal of Shira Local Government Council ex-Chairman, Hon. Abdullahi Ibrahim Beli for reason not best known to him, when he was as a result also asked to resign from office by the Shira Local Government stakeholders.


Ba-Maraya said however that he was adamant to the efforts of the stakeholders who want force him resign from his seat, as a result of which, the stakeholders through the Shira Divisional Police Officer (DPO) arrested him and took him to a Correctional Centre where he spent seven without trial before he was bailed out.


According to the former deputy chairman, he was taken by surprise when he heard that bye elections would be conducted into the seat of the council chairman, Hon. Abdullahi Beli, along with
