Despite Tinubu’s Order, PDP Headquarters Remains Sealed by FCTA Officials

More than a full day after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu instructed the unsealing of properties locked over unpaid ground rent, the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja remains shut.

The clampdown began on Monday when officials of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) moved against several properties, sealing them due to failure to settle ground rent obligations—a move that sparked immediate backlash.

In response, President Tinubu swiftly intervened, calling for the immediate reopening of all affected premises. He also announced a 14-day grace period for property owners to clear their outstanding ground rent, subject to a N2 million penalty, and urged them to regularize their land documentation before the deadline.

However, a visit by our correspondent to the PDP national headquarters in Wuse Zone 5 on Wednesday around 10:15 a.m. revealed that the premises remained locked. A red FCTA seal was still visibly plastered beside the padlocked gate.

Several PDP staff were spotted outside the complex—some seated by the entrance, others pacing around—visibly frustrated by the situation.

Speaking anonymously, one of the employees claimed there might be a deliberate directive preventing the reopening of the PDP office.

“I was present yesterday when they (FCTA officials) unsealed places like FIRS, Ibro Hotel, and NAPTIP. But once they arrived at our gate, they abruptly turned back,” he said.

“I went to the Lands Department myself to ask questions. The director told me they’re waiting for instructions from AGIS before taking any action on the PDP building.”

As of the time of this report, the party had not released any official statement on the ongoing closure.

Following the initial sealing on Monday, PDP’s Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, strongly criticized the move, calling it “the height of irresponsibility” on the part of the authorities.

“If their plan is to arrest all of us, let them come—we are not afraid,” Damagum declared.

He accused the FCTA of acting with political bias and attempting to stifle democratic processes.

“This is nothing short of an attack on democracy, and we reject it outright,” he emphasized.

Tensions between the PDP and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, a former PDP stalwart himself, have been simmering for months, fueling speculation about the motives behind the continued sealing of the opposition party’s headquarters.
