CHAOS IN KANO: DPO Beaten to Death, Police Station Burnt as Protest Over Suspect’s Death Turns Deadly — 27 Arrested

Kano, Nigeria – Tension escalated into tragedy on Sunday when a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Kano State was beaten to death by an enraged mob protesting the alleged death of a suspect in police custody. The violent uproar also saw the local police station set ablaze and several patrol vehicles destroyed.

Eyewitnesses say the incident occurred in the early hours of the day after news spread that a young man had died under controversial circumstances while in police detention. Furious community members stormed the station in retaliation, overpowering officers on duty and launching a full-scale assault.

Efforts by security reinforcements to quell the chaos came too late to save the DPO, whose identity is being withheld pending official notification of next of kin. The facility was left in ruins, with charred vehicles and smouldering walls painting a grim picture of the unrest.

Police authorities have since confirmed the arrest of 27 suspects in connection with the attack. In a statement, the Kano State Police Command condemned the incident as a “barbaric act of jungle justice” and vowed to bring all perpetrators to book.

The Command also promised a thorough investigation into the suspect’s death in custody, assuring the public that justice will be served on all fronts.

The state government has appealed for calm as security operatives continue patrols in the affected area to prevent further escalation.
