Akwa Ibom Police Warn Masquerades Against Criminal Acts

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has sounded a strong warning to individuals using masquerade festivals as a cover for criminal activities.

Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, fsi, expressed concern over reports of masquerades engaging in illegal acts such as aiding crimes, carrying firearms, assaulting innocent citizens, and peddling hard drugs.

“Masquerades are meant to bring joy and showcase our rich cultural identity, not to serve as a disguise for criminal elements,” Azare said. “It is utterly disheartening to see this revered tradition being desecrated by a few misguided individuals.”

He stressed that the Command will no longer tolerate such abuses, warning that anyone caught hiding behind masquerade costumes to commit crimes will face the full wrath of the law.

The Police have pledged to step up intelligence gathering and operations to identify and arrest offenders.

Calling for public cooperation, the Command urged community leaders, traditional rulers, and residents to share credible information that will help curb the trend.

“The long arm of the law will catch up with you,” CP Azare declared. “We will not allow a few bad apples to spoil the reputation of our vibrant cultural heritage.”
