Troops Nab Railway Vandals in Yobe, Arrest 8 — Including 5 NSCDC Officers

In a major breakthrough against infrastructure sabotage, troops of Sector 2, Operation Hadin Kai, have intercepted a truck loaded with suspected stolen railway materials and arrested eight individuals — five of whom are officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The interception took place on Monday, July 8, around 4:00 p.m. in the Katarko area of Gujba Local Government Area, Yobe State, following actionable intelligence on the movement of vandalised railway iron sleepers.

Military sources disclosed that the truck, en route to Damaturu, was accompanied by an NSCDC-marked Hilux vehicle bearing registration number CD 234 A, believed to have been used to escort the stolen items.

Preliminary investigations suggest the railway components were removed from rail lines in the Kukuwa axis of Gujba LGA. Findings also indicate that the NSCDC operatives were allegedly recruited by the vandals to provide armed escort in exchange for cash.

Security forces recovered ₦128,500 from one of the NSCDC officers — suspected to be part of the payment for the illegal operation. The money was hidden in his innerwear at the time of arrest.

The Nigerian Army has since handed over all suspects, the recovered cash, and seized vehicles to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Damaturu for further action. An anti-bomb unit has also been deployed to inspect the confiscated materials for potential threats.

Officials say investigations are ongoing and assured that all parties involved will face the full weight of the law.
