Katsina Government Dismisses Rumours of Road Closure in Dutsinma, Suspends NURTW Branch Chairman

The Katsina State Government has refuted claims that major roads linking Dutsinma to Yantumaki and Marabar Kankara have been closed due to security threats, labelling the reports as unfounded and intentionally alarming.

At a media briefing held on Tuesday, June 11, 2025, the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Bala Salisu Zango, addressed the public, asserting that no directive—either from the state government or security agencies—had been issued to shut down the mentioned routes. He reassured the public that the roads remain open and safe for both residents and motorists.

The origin of the rumour was traced to a statement allegedly made by Malam Aminu Usman, the local chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Dutsinma. He reportedly claimed the roads had been closed due to growing security concerns in the area.

In response, the state chapter of the NURTW swiftly distanced itself from the statement, declaring that Malam Usman acted without approval or consultation. The Katsina State NURTW Chairman, Alhaji Musa Garba Yandoma, announced the suspension of the Dutsinma branch chairman pending a full investigation into his actions.

“No such order came from the government or security officials. His unilateral statement breached the union’s code of conduct and created unnecessary panic,” Alhaji Yandoma stated.

Dr. Zango acknowledged that while certain regions in the state do face security issues, the information about road closures was overblown and misleading. He emphasized that the Dutsinma routes are under constant surveillance with active security checkpoints in place to ensure the safety of road users.

“Closing such a crucial road would not only incite fear but also paralyze economic and social life for several communities. It could also obstruct emergency services like ambulances and fire response teams,” he said.

The government confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway to determine who was behind the misinformation and warned that those responsible would face legal repercussions.

In his final remarks, Dr. Zango urged the public to ignore the rumour and continue their normal routines, advising them to rely solely on information from official government channels.

“This road represents more than just a link between towns—it stands for the unity and forward movement of our people. The government remains committed to protecting all lives, infrastructure, and communities across Katsina State,” he concluded.
