Lawmakers allege political witch-hunt as anti-cult law sparks eviction fears in opposition strongholds

 Tension is brewing in Edo State following explosive allegations by a federal lawmaker that Governor Godwin Obaseki is using the state’s Anti-Cultism Law as a political weapon to intimidate and displace opposition members.

In a dramatic outcry, the lawmaker accused the governor of targeting loyalists of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who refused to decamp to the All Progressives Congress (APC), claiming they are being labelled as cultists and threatened with eviction from their homes.

“The message is clear and chilling,” the lawmaker said. “Join the APC or lose your home. That’s the new reality for anyone who dares to stand with the PDP in Edo.”

According to sources within the PDP, entire neighborhoods perceived as opposition strongholds have been marked for crackdown under the guise of fighting cultism. Residents say uniformed men have been harassing youths and demolishing houses without due process.

Critics of the governor argue that while curbing cultism is necessary, the law is being selectively applied—conveniently sparing those aligned with the ruling APC while coming down hard on vocal PDP supporters.

Civil society groups are beginning to weigh in, warning that the abuse of legal instruments for political gain could set a dangerous precedent in Nigeria’s democratic space.

As political temperatures rise ahead of the 2024 governorship elections in Edo, many fear that if unchecked, this trend could plunge the state into a deeper state of fear and repression.

“This is no longer about law and order,” one activist said. “It’s about using state power to silence dissent. And that should worry every Nigerian.”
