Fact Check: No Attack on Buratai — Ex-Army Chief Never in Danger, Media Blasted for Misinformation

Buratai, Borno State — Recent reports claiming that former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai (rtd), narrowly escaped death in a supposed Boko Haram ambush have been exposed as outright falsehoods — a cocktail of misinformation and media recklessness.

Security sources and frontline counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama have debunked the viral claim, affirming that Lt.-Gen. Buratai was neither in Buratai town nor part of any convoy ambushed by terrorists, contrary to the narrative circulated by some media outlets and even echoed by Senator Ali Ndume.

What really happened?

On Friday, ISWAP fighters launched a coordinated assault on military facilities in Buratai, Biu LGA — targeting the Battalion Headquarters, the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution, and Command Secondary School. It was a bold but ultimately failed attack, repelled by gallant ground troops with air support from Nigerian Air Force Super Tucano jets.

At no point was the retired General or his entourage involved. No convoy. No ambush. No close shave. Just another day of battlefield victory — not a brush with death for the ex-COAS.

So how did the lie spread?

Political chatter and lazy journalism.

Security analysts are slamming what they describe as a “shameful failure” of media due diligence. “The facts were never checked, and in this region, fake news like this does real damage,” Makama emphasized.


A Call for Media Responsibility

The false narrative not only misleads the public but risks undermining trust in both military operations and legitimate news. In a region long tormented by terrorism, truth is not optional — it is essential.


BOTTOM LINE:

There was NO ATTACK on Lt.-Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai. Reports suggesting otherwise are categorically false. The media must do better — stop twisting the truth for traffic.
