Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has inspected ongoing construction works at the site of the proposed Maiduguri International Conference Centre, a landmark facility designed to host up to 4,000 participants and position Borno as a prime destination for international events.

 

The inspection marked a crucial milestone in the state’s urban renewal strategy and quest to reclaim its place as the Northeast hub for high-level national and international engagements.

 

Speaking during the visit, Governor Zulum emphasized the importance of having a befitting venue for global conferences, stating:

 

 

“We need to have a standard international conference center in order to maintain our name as the North East hub. Currently, we lack such a facility. I believe when this project is completed, Borno State will be able to host any kind of conference.”

 

 

The project, awarded after a due procurement process in December 2024, is scheduled for completion within 18 months. It is sited on seven hectares of land, with the main conference building occupying 6,000 square meters.

 

Engineer Usman Tijani, who presented on behalf of the project team, highlighted key features of the center. These include a multipurpose main auditorium with 2,500 seating capacity, an elevated 1,100-seat tiered gallery, banquet hall, breakout committee rooms, and a media center.

 

Additional facilities will include:

 

 

- A 400-vehicle parking area

 

- Guest chalets

 

- A masjid

 

- Exhibition grounds for outdoor events

 

- Integrated solar grid and water infrastructure with borehole, overhead tank, and underground reservoir

 


 

Engineer Tijani also assured the governor of the project team’s commitment to international standards, accessibility, and timely delivery:

 

 

“We have incorporated provisions for the disabled, in line with global accessibility standards. We are committed to delivering a world-class facility within the stipulated timeframe.”

 

 

Governor Zulum was accompanied during the visit by top government officials including the Secretary to the State Government, the Head of Service, members of the Borno State Executive Council, and lawmakers.

 

The International Conference Centre is one of the flagship projects under the Zulum administration’s urban development agenda aimed at modernizing Maiduguri and enhancing the state’s economic potential through events, tourism, and investment promotion.
