All Eyes on Benue: Fulani Groups Raise Alarm Over Killings, Warn of Reprisal

Tension is mounting in Benue State as Fulani socio-cultural groups raise the alarm over the killing of at least 20 herders and over 400 cattle in suspected militia attacks across several local government areas.

The grim incident, which has sparked outrage within Fulani communities nationwide, is feared to be a flashpoint for renewed cycles of violence in Nigeria’s volatile Middle Belt region. Some aggrieved 1¹qqqqqqqqqindividuals have publicly vowed revenge if justice is not swiftly served.

“We can no longer watch our people being slaughtered like animals while the authorities remain silent. This is an invitation to anarchy,” a Fulani community leader told reporters under anonymity.

Despite the severity of the attacks, the Benue State Government has yet to issue a formal response or condemn the killings—a silence that has further inflamed tensions.

Human rights advocates and community leaders are calling for urgent action. “The Benue State Government must immediately launch an impartial investigation into the killings, arrest and prosecute the perpetrators, and begin peacebuilding efforts in the affected communities,” said a representative of a national pastoralist association.

Security experts warn that failure to address the situation could plunge the region into retaliatory violence, deepening ethnic tensions and destabilizing fragile local peace efforts.

As anxiety grips the state, Nigerians are watching closely, hoping the government acts swiftly to douse the flames before they erupt.
