Zulum Urges NEDC to Prioritise Impactful Projects Across Northeast

Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has urged the North East Development Commission (NEDC) to focus on delivering projects with lasting impact and meaningful benefits for communities across the region.

 

Governor Zulum made the call on Tuesday while receiving the board and expanded management team of the NEDC at the Government House in Maiduguri. The delegation was led by the Minister of State for Regional Development, Uba funding Ahmodu.

 

Zulum emphasised that the commission should prioritise key infrastructure that will unlock the economic potential of the region, including security, independent electricity supply, dry inland ports, better road networks, and integration into the African Continental Free Trade Area.

 

According to him, more than half of the commission’s funding window, as stipulated in the act establishing it, has already elapsed.

 

 

"We must now focus on projects that will give us maximum benefit," Zulum said. "Other regional commissions are performing, and we cannot afford to fall short. This is a critical moment to prove the relevance of the NEDC.”

 

 

He warned that all stakeholders—whether ministers, lawmakers, or commission executives—will ultimately be held accountable for the commission's performance.

 

Despite the challenge, Governor Zulum reaffirmed the commitment of Northeast governors to supporting the commission to achieve its mandate.

 

He also commended the NEDC for its previous interventions, including humanitarian support, school construction, and other initiatives aimed at rebuilding lives and livelihoods.

 

In his remarks, Minister of State for Regional Development, Uba Maigari Ahmodu, called for stronger collaboration with the North East Governors Forum to advance the North East Stabilisation and Development Plan.

 

He assured that the ministry would strengthen oversight to ensure the commission fulfils its responsibility to rebuild and stabilise the region after years of insurgency.

 

The NEDC delegation included the Chairman of the House Committee on NEDC, Hon. Usman Zannah; the NEDC Board Chairman, Major General Paul Tarfa (Rtd); the commission’s Managing Director, Mohammed Goni Alkali; and other senior officials.
