Shehu Sani Fires Shot at U.S. Democracy: “Is America Copying Africa?”

Fiery former Senator Shehu Sani has once again stirred global debate—this time taking a jab at the United States and its recent clampdown on student protests.

In a bold post on his official X account, Sani wrote:
"When the world’s most advanced democracy is witch-hunting student protesters, persecuting its Universities, disobeying court orders and deporting even legal immigrants; I don’t know whether it’s Africa copying American democracy or it’s America copying African democracy."

The post, which has since gone viral, comes amid growing criticism of U.S. authorities for their response to pro-Palestinian student protests across campuses. Critics have pointed to arrests, expulsions, and what some view as an erosion of civil liberties in the name of order.

Sani, known for his biting commentary and advocacy for human rights, flipped the usual narrative—where African nations are often accused of authoritarian tendencies—by questioning whether America is now mirroring the very undemocratic practices it once condemned abroad.

His statement has sparked waves of reactions, with some hailing him as a fearless truth-teller and others accusing him of oversimplifying complex issues.

Whether seen as satire or a sobering warning, Shehu Sani’s words once again spotlight the tension between democratic ideals and political realities—on both sides of the Atlantic.
