SEMA Sympathizes With Safana Residents After Devastating Rainstorm

A powerful rainstorm that struck Safana Local Government Area of Katsina State on Monday, May 26, has left a trail of destruction, damaging over 250 homes, shops, and critical infrastructure. In swift response, a delegation from the Katsina State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) visited the affected communities to express sympathy and assess the scale of the damage.

Led by the Director of Search and Rescue Operations, Alhaji Iliyasu Ibrahim Rafukka, the delegation was received at the Safana Local Government Secretariat by the Vice Chairman, Alhaji Audu Abu Illela, who stood in for the council chairman currently on pilgrimage.

Speaking on behalf of the Executive Secretary of SEMA, Hajiya Binta Hussaini Dangani, Alhaji Rafukka conveyed heartfelt sympathy to the people of Safana. He stated that the agency was directed to visit immediately after receiving the distress report on Sunday night.

“We are here to sympathize and also assess the damage caused by the storm, which plunged the area into darkness and destroyed many homes. Thankfully, no lives or livestock were lost,” Rafukka stated.

Vice Chairman Illela, who later led the team through the devastated areas, expressed appreciation for SEMA's prompt visit. He revealed that the local government has activated its emergency response plan in partnership with relevant stakeholders to ease the victims’ suffering.

Illela instructed the Local Emergency Management Committee (LEMC) and ward councillors to compile a comprehensive list of affected residents across Safana town and surrounding villages for submission to SEMA for relief support.

The SEMA team also paid a courtesy visit to the District Head of Safana, Yariman Katsina, Alhaji Sada Rufa’i, who confirmed that his residence was among the affected buildings. He praised the agency for the timely visit and called for urgent support for the victims.

Residents, some of whom spoke during the visit, thanked SEMA for the compassion shown and expressed hope that relief materials would soon follow.

The agency is expected to submit its findings and recommendations to the Executive Secretary for further action.
