Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have thwarted a major Boko Haram/ISWAP assault on their position in New Marte, Borno State, killing scores of insurgents and recovering a Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) among other items.

The daring but failed attack occurred in the early hours of May 27, 2025, when insurgents attempted to breach the defensive perimeter of the troops’ location. According to Captain Reuben Kovangiya, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters Theatre Command OPHK, a heavy exchange of gunfire followed, as reinforcements from the 24 Task Force Brigade Garrison and the 134 Special Forces Battalion swiftly responded.

"The air component provided timely Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance, along with precision strikes that decimated several fleeing terrorists," Captain Kovangiya said.

During mop-up operations, troops recovered an SUV rigged with explosives believed to have been abandoned by the fleeing insurgents and destroyed multiple motorcycles used by the attackers. Lifeless bodies of terrorists were found scattered, with blood trails marking their escape routes, indicating further enemy casualties.

In a related operation at Kumshe, more insurgents were neutralized after attempting to storm a Forward Operating Base. The troops stood firm, repelling the attack and inflicting a "bloody nose" on the enemy.

Regrettably, two soldiers paid the ultimate price during the engagements.

Captain Kovangiya noted that the operations reflect the high level of coordination between air and ground components of OPHK and reaffirm the troops’ resolve to deny terrorists freedom of movement and restore peace and security in Nigeria’s Northeast.

"The resilience and determination of our forces are yielding results, as we remain committed to disrupting terrorist operations and facilitating the return of normal socio-economic activities across the region," he added.
