KATSINA – Watermelon traders in Katsina State are calling on Governor Dikko Umar Radda to allocate a permanent market space for their business, saying the move would stimulate local revenue, curb unemployment, and boost the state’s agricultural economy.

Speaking to Hikaya TV, Danjuma Abdullahi Zakiru, Chairman of the Katsina State Watermelon Traders Association, said thousands of traders across the state are hampered by the lack of a designated market area. “We appeal to Governor Umar Radda, a man of the people, to help us secure land. A permanent market will create jobs and empower youths to be self-reliant,” Zakiru urged.

Zakiru estimated that over 60,000 large-scale traders operate in Katsina’s watermelon value chain, with many small-scale investors struggling to join due to infrastructure gaps. He commended the governor’s recent fertilizer intervention, describing it as timely support for local farmers.

Echoing the appeal, the Association’s Secretary, Husaini Ibrahim Rimaye, said the absence of a structured market discourages large buyers from other regions and countries. “Other states have permanent watermelon markets and are reaping the benefits. Katsina, as a major producer, must not be left behind,” he said.

Rimaye emphasized that watermelon trading is a low-capital, high-yield business ideal for young entrepreneurs — if properly supported.

Adding a logistical perspective, Ibrahim Yahaya, Chairman of the Association’s Transport Union, said traders often face spoilage and losses due to long-distance transport and lack of storage facilities. “Without a central market, we suffer daily losses. We need a stable base to grow,” he lamented.

The traders believe that with a permanent market, Katsina can transform its watermelon trade into a key economic driver, bringing in more revenue and creating thousands of jobs.
