Governor Radda Meets Spinal Injury Association — Pledges Support, Orders Completion of Admin Centre at FMC

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda has reaffirmed his administration’s support for persons living with spinal cord injuries across Katsina State.


He gave the assurance while receiving a delegation from the Association of Persons with Spinal Cord Injuries at Government House, Katsina. The team was led by Lt. Hudu Usman (Rtd.), the Governor’s Special Assistant on Special Needs — who’s also a survivor of spinal injury from his time in military service.


Speaking during the visit, Governor Radda expressed concern over the financial challenges faced by spinal injury patients, especially the cost of treatment. He pledged to complete the association’s administrative block at the Federal Medical Centre, which had stalled due to lack of funds.


“I’ve directed that the centre be finished as designed — no delays,” he said. “It’ll serve as their base and help them access more support locally and internationally.”


The Governor also promised medical and financial help for members who are less privileged. “No one should be left behind just because of a disability,” he added.


The visit followed a personal outreach by Hajiya Wasilla Sani Saulawa, who contacted the Governor on behalf of the association.


One of the members shared her story — how she became paralyzed 18 years ago after an accident while four months pregnant. Thanks to her family’s support, she got proper treatment, both in Nigeria and abroad. “That pregnancy? He’s now an 18-year-old university student,” she said, seated in her wheelchair.


The association, with over 800 members across Katsina, explained that construction of their admin block at FMC had earlier received a boost from Gwagware Foundation, which donated blocks and cement. But work stopped due to funding gaps.


They appealed for further help — from daily needs to settling medical bills. “We’ve lost at least ten members this year alone — mostly from kidney issues caused by untreated urinary problems,” they said.


They also asked for an office to properly manage their operations and qualify for NGO support, especially from international donors who require proper structure and member data.


Governor Radda thanked them for their courage and assured them of his government’s continued support — not just in words, but with action.


“This administration is for everyone — including the vulnerable. We’ll stand with you,” he said.
