CDHR Kaduna State Condemns the Deportation of Islamic Cleric Dr. Ahmad Abubakar Mahmoud Gumi

The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Kaduna State Branch , strongly condemns the recent deportation of renowned Islamic cleric, Dr. Ahmad Abubakar Mahmoud Gumi, who was on an official religious assignment sanctioned by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).

In a statement Signed by Comrade Ali Attahiru ,Chairman,CDHR Kaduna State BRANCH made available to news men revealed that

Dr. Gumi, a respected scholar and influential voice within the Nigerian Islamic community, was reportedly denied the opportunity to carry out his official duties and was unjustly deported back to Nigeria despite being duly assigned to participate in the 2025 Hajj operations.

This action not only undermines the sanctity of a sovereign nation’s religious delegation but also poses serious questions regarding the treatment of Nigerian religious leaders abroad, particularly when acting under the authority of a recognized government institution like NAHCON.

CDHR Kaduna State views this act as a violation of both human rights and diplomatic protocol. Dr. Gumi was not traveling as a private individual but as an appointed representative entrusted with religious guidance and duties during one of the most significant annual religious pilgrimages in the world.

We call on the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and NAHCON to immediately engage the relevant authorities of the host country to seek a thorough explanation and accountability for this embarrassing incident. The deportation of a high-profile cleric without transparent justification reflects a troubling disregard for Nigerian representation and undermines interfaith respect and cooperation.

Furthermore, we urge NAHCON to clarify the circumstances surrounding this incident and assure Nigerians that due diligence will be done to prevent the recurrence of such a diplomatic embarrassment. The rights and dignity of Nigerian citizens, particularly those performing religious duties, must be safeguarded at all times.

The CDHR Kaduna State remains committed to defending the rights and liberties of all Nigerians, regardless of creed or status. We stand in solidarity with Dr. Gumi and call for justice, accountability, and the reaffirmation of Nigeria’s dignity on the international stage.
