BREAKING: Tragedy Strikes Kano Pillars Contingent — Dozens Feared Dead in Fatal Accident After National Sports Festival
By Abdullahi Inuwa
What was meant to be a triumphant return turned into a horrific tragedy Friday, as members of the Kano State contingent to the just-concluded National Sports Festival in Ogun State were involved in a fatal accident in Kura Local Government Area of Kano State.
According to credible reports from Zagazola Makama, the vehicle conveying the athletes plunged off a bridge in the Kura area, claiming the lives of several passengers and leaving many others critically injured.
The ill-fated bus, which was said to be carrying at least 35 athletes and officials, crashed while en route to Kano city shortly after departing Ogun State, where the sports festival had drawn teams from across the nation.
Eyewitnesses and survivors described a horrifying scene. One survivor, speaking to Premier Radio 102.7 FM, recounted the chaos: “It was like a nightmare. People were screaming, some died instantly, and others were bleeding badly.”
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, ferrying the injured to the General Hospital in Kura. However, no official casualty figure has yet been released as of the time of filing this report.
Efforts to reach officials of the Kano State Sports Commission for comments have been unsuccessful, as the state reels from the shock of the incident.
This tragic event casts a somber shadow over what should have been a celebratory homecoming for young athletes who represented Kano with pride.
Further updates will follow as more details emerge.
