Safe Motherhood: Sokoto Govt coordinates interventions to strengthen family planning services

 

The Sokoto State Government has streamline donor interventions on immunisation, family planning, reproductive health and other healthcare services to strengthen safe motherhood across the state.


The Executive Secretary of Sokoto State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (SSHCDA), Dr Larai Tambuwal, disclosed this in an interview with our Correspondentm


Tambuwal commended all stakeholders for the achievement, stressing that Gov. Ahmad Aliyu had released N30 million sequel to the establishment of a dedicated family planning fund and budget line.


She said the fund was part of government commitment to sustain the provision of family planning commodities and services in the state.


According to her,  the effort encompassed maternal health and supporting the current Family Planning as well as Last Mile distribution infrastructure in recognition of the social, economic and development challenges faced by the state.


She highlighted that the state government also created a Family Planning Technical Working Group that would continue to guide the coordination of stakeholders.


 '' It was a significant step toward advancing family planning initiatives after the joint unveiling of the National Guidelines for State-Funded Procurement of Family Planning Commodities last year,'' Tambuwal said. 


The Executive Secretary noted that this will enable the health and development benefits of family planning to be accessible at the state.


She explained that the investment would help in ensuring continuous availability of contraceptives, enabling individuals and families to make informed choices about their reproductive health.


”This milestone aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen supply chain systems, enhance service delivery, awareness and improve health outcomes across the state, she added.


She commended The Challenge Initiative (TCI) for overwhelming support to commemorates Safe Motherhood Day 2025 under the theme “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures,” 


She said TCI supports Nigerians to celebrates a quiet but powerful revolution safeguarding the lives of mothers and children as well as ensure rise in access to family planning (FP) and childbirth spacing services across the country.


'' This collaborative effort sets the stage for a more robust and accessible family planning framework in Sokoto state, aiming to positively impact the health and well-being of its residents,” she said.


She thanked all stakeholders working tirelessly to advance access to quality reproductive health services in Sokoto state, urging them to sustain the efforts to make a difference in society.


The Newsmen reports that TCI launched in 2017 a transition the gains of NURHI into a platform that empowers state governments to take ownership.


The effort was to scale up proven interventions, and drive impact across more states with an expanded reach that now includes both urban and underserved rural areas.  


According to Dr. Taiwo Johnson, Country Team Lead, TCI Nigeria, the proven model  puts local governments in the driver’s seat to sustainably scale reproductive health solutions. 


Johnson added that the action was in partnership with over a dozen state governments, TCI is making motherhood safer, families healthier, and futures brighter.


.“Safe motherhood starts before the first contraction, it begins with informed choices, timely access to family planning, and a community that supports women at every step of their reproductive journey, '' Johnson said.
