Lawmaking to Lawbreaking: The One-Way Violation Syndrome in Katsina metropolis

Road user safety and traffic regulations are the mandates of all motorists as well as enforcement agencies. 

Katsina is like many other states in federation with road safety regulations along with domesticated clear road traffic regulations designed to ensure order and safety for all road users.

However, a disturbing trend has emerged where those expected to uphold the law such as Lawmakers, senior lecturers, doctors, and even professors were among those violating traffic rules by driving against one-way routes.

The Sardauna and Fatima Shema Housing Estates have become hotspots for this traffic violation, causing concern among law-abiding citizens and raising questions about the enforcement of traffic laws in the state.

The One-Way Violation Epidemic

The one-way rule is a fundamental road traffic law designed to prevent accidents and maintain smooth vehicular movement. 

However, residents of these estates have continuously flouted this regulation, creating unnecessary gridlock, confusion, and potential dangers for pedestrians and motorists.

Ironically, those engaging in this act are individuals expected to serve as role models in society. Reports indicated that a serving lawmaker, respected senior lecturers, medical professionals, and even professors have been seen driving against traffic with impunity, disregarding both the law and public safety.

A resident of Fatima Shema Housing Estate, who preferred to remain anonymous, expressed his frustration:

"We see these so-called educated people, people who make laws and teach others about rules, openly violating traffic laws. If they can’t obey simple road regulations, what example are they setting for the younger generation?"

The Impact on Law-Abiding Residents

The actions of these individuals are not without consequences. Law-abiding residents who respect the one-way rule often find themselves at risk of head-on collisions with violators. Pedestrians, including schoolchildren, are also exposed to danger as reckless driving increases the chances of accidents.

Another resident of Sardauna Estate, a trader named Malam Usman, recounted a near-miss incident:

"Last week, a doctor who lives in this estate was speeding against traffic. He almost hit a motorcyclist carrying a young boy. The motorcyclist had to swerve sharply to avoid a collision, and they both fell. These people act like they are above the law."

Failure of Enforcement Agencies?

Many residents blame the seeming inaction of the relevant traffic authorities for the continued violation of the one-way rule. They argue that if the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Katsina State Traffic Management Agency (KASTLEA) enforced the laws effectively, these violations would not be so rampant.

"Why do they only go after commercial drivers and motorcyclists? Why are elites not being punished?" asked another frustrated resident.

Call for Immediate Action

With growing concerns about road safety, residents are calling on authorities to take immediate action against violators, regardless of their status or profession. They demand includes;  Strict enforcement of the one-way rule with arrests and penalties for offenders. Public naming and shaming of prominent violators to deter others from following suit and Installation of road signs and speed bumps in strategic areas to enforce compliance.

It a widely concern that if nothing is done, the continued disregard for traffic laws may lead to severe accidents and even loss of lives. It is time for those who make laws to start obeying them.
