UMTH Resumes successfull Kidney Transplants with 3, Offers Dialysis at One of the World’s Cheapest Rates

The University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) has successfully conducted another round of kidney transplants, reinforcing its reputation as a leading renal treatment center in Nigeria.


 Led by neurologist Dr. Hassan Mohammed Gogo, the surgical team carried out the transplants between May 20th and 22nd, 2025. The team comprised top specialists including Professor Mohammed Gadam, Professor Haruna Ngadda, Dr. Ahmed Head of the Anaesthesia Unit Dr. Zanna, and Professor Sani Alhaji Hassan, among others.


Speaking at the international  press conference held Wednesday on 11th of June  2025  at the UMTH Conference Hall, Chief Medical Director (CMD), Professor Ahmed Ahidjo, described the procedure as a landmark success. He credited the hospital’s preparedness, the support of the hospital’s management. 


“This is not the first time UMTH has performed kidney transplants. Our first was in August 2010. With improved capacity and technology, we’ve resumed the procedures in full force,” Prof. Ahidjo noted.


He disclosed that UMTH hosts the largest kidney center in Nigeria, with 85-bed capacity and four (4) dedicated operating theatres equipped with advanced surgical tools, endoscopic cameras, and modern lighting systems. The CMD acknowledged the contributions of the former TETFund Chairman and lauded Governor Babagana Umara Zulum for providing a special grant of ₦50 million to the hospital for onward investigation of causes of Kidney failures in Borno State. 


In a remarkable gesture, Prof. Ahidjo revealed that the recent transplants were carried out free of charge, courtesy of an anonymous donor who paid ₦15 million to cover procedures for three patients. However, he said over 20 other patients are currently awaiting transplants and appealed to the public, philanthropists, and corporate bodies for support.


“We are committed to providing the surgery for free, but the medications and essential chemicals are very expensive,” he explained.


He praised the Federal Government for subsidizing kidney dialysis, adding that UMTH now offers dialysis for just twelve thousand Naira (₦12000)  per session  roughly eight United state ($8) making it one of the cheapest rates globally. “In Nigeria and  other parts of the world, dialysis can cost as much as $1,000 per session . The support we receive makes this possible,” he added.


According to Prof. Ahidjo, the hospital now has over 20 dialysis machines and an independent renal laboratory center, reducing reliance on the main hospital lab.


He commended Vice President Kashim Shettima for initiating the subsidized kidney dialysis program in Maiduguri and reaffirmed that UMTH is not a profit-driven organization.


“The cost of the service doesn’t even cover maintenance of the machines, but we are determined to keep our services accessible to the public,” he said.


Prof. Ahidjo also identified diabetes and hypertension as major contributors to kidney disease. He noted that samples are being analyzed to determine specific regional causes, while urging the public to adopt healthier lifestyles, stay hydrated, and engage in regular physical activity to reduce risks.  END
